Last Meeting Lupus Society of Hamilton |
The Lupus Society of Hamilton, founded in 1978 in Hamilton, Ontario held its final meeting on September 26, 2004 at Construction House in Hamilton, Ontario. Past presidents Peter Hill, Lorrie Powless and Anne Matheson were in attendance as President, Shannen Sorgi talked about plans for the launch of LSH as a Chapter of Lupus Ontario. Jean Ingram and Anne Matheson, both charter members reminisced fondly about the first meeting of LSH that they had attended in November 1977.
The Lupus Society of Hamilton, founded by Joan McKee, recently deceased, was incorporated in February 1978 at a time when patients and many physicians knew little about Lupus. LSH served Hamilton and area Lupus sufferers for over a quarter of a century, raising over $300,000.00 for research which has translated into a better understanding and management of Lupus in our community and beyond.
While many of the charter members are still with the organization, membership numbers had significantly decreased over the past few years. Anne Matheson, who dropped in briefly with Granddaughter, Katelyn, said that we all can be proud of the accomplishments of 'our' small organization. She said, "People with Lupus and their families worked very hard to make Lupus known in our community and to help those living with it to understand what they were facing and how to live as well as possible. I think we did a great job".
